After Jesus was resurrected and ascended to Heaven, His apostles waited in a house in Jerusalem for the appearance of the Holy Spirit, which Jesus had promised. On the Jewish festival day of Shavuot (Pentecost), there was the sound of great wind and the Holy Spirit descended upon them.
"They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." (Acts 2:3-4)
